Political satirist and comic Tim Young invited his girlfriend onstage at the Riot Act theatre in Washington DC to make a deeply-felt speech about their relationship. He then popped the big question but what he got was not what he sought.
This astonishing footage is taken from a stand up comedy set. The video starts where Tim says she means "everything to him", and he wanted to tell her that he wants to spend the rest of his life with her.
He takes a ring box out of his pocket and as he drops to one knee to propose , her furious 'quit it' hand signals couldn't be clearer, but he stumbles on.
Talking off-mic, she looks appalled, and the duo have a short tete-a-tete in full view of the audience. She finally leaves the stage abruptly, and he turns to the audience.
"I guess I’ll try to do some jokes," he dejectedly tells the crowd.
It's unclear from the video whether it's part of the show or an elaborate hoax, but it's from a comedy show which took place in 2012 and has been a viral favourite ever since.
Commenters online feel Young's pain. One wrote on YouTube : "I want to shake that guy's hand. To be able to do anything except walk off the stage and collapse is amazing to me"
Another added: "That has got to be one of the most humiliating things to go through... Proposing probably shouldn't be done in front of a crowd unless you are positive that person is going to say yes."
