The black circular light fitting, measuring around 10ft across with dozens of bulbs in glass casings, fell onto tables as diners were tucking into their food.

The diners all showed surprise at what they described as 'shocking and unprecdented' becuase the restaurant was known for its apt attention to details.

Pictures showed the fallen fitting lying across tables and chairs with shattered glass everywhere.

A spokesman for the South Central Ambulance Service said an ambulance was sent to the London Street restaurant to treat up to 10 people injured after a "large" chandelier had fallen.

When paramedics assessed the affected, they saw that some were seriously.
